First there are three ways of treating an apple tree, first as a production tree to get the most yield of apples, second as an ornamental in your yard and trim for visual effects, third is a combination of the first two with less fruit production and a little less splendor. Trimming for production needs to be done in early spring along with a feeding of fertilizer. Trimming for visual can be done at any time, as long as there is not a drought going on.
